Berlin, Tempodrom 7th May 2010, 20.00 hrs – 23.00 hrs
What a beautiful day for waiting outside the Tempo-drom with about 6.000 other Snow Patrol fans. The sun was shining while we stood in a long row for getting ad-mitted by the big grim boys at the entrances. These typical body guard guys were looking inside each rucksack and big bags. What they were looking for? Water bot-tles! Simply plastic bottles filled with mineral water!
Being asked for the reason for doing so, they answered pretty harsh, “because it’s forbidden!” that’s all. We think the main reason might be the event management wanted to earn the whole profit from selling beverages. In the end we made it! We found our places and settled down for the event.
It’s always pretty interesting watching all these people streaming inside the middle of the arena. Everyone was trying to get the best place just in front of the stage. But not many belonged to the lucky few. These were mostly young girls and even some boys willing to stand straight up to two hours before the beginning and then hold out the whole concert’s duration.
Well, our humans are quite old and their bones are darn cracked since a while…hehehe…! So what? Yeah, we had marked seats. We bears had an excellent view from the rucksack’s top. Burnie whispered in my ear “Greg, did you already noticed that we’re always ON TOP?” She was excited, we held paws…and the fun began!
Just on time at 20.00 hours the concert’s supporting group Foals appeared on stage, starting with a powerful song from their latest released CD. Although we didn’t know this band before, we must admit that we much enjoyed the kind of fresh, young and independent style of the music and performance.
These young guys seem to be very talented and we hope they’ll become better known as time goes on. At least the audience was enthusiastic about the Foals. After 30 minutes performance they were sent home with agree-ng happy applause.
The stage’s rebuilding for Snow Patrol took about a 30 minutes break. We hardly can believe why humans al-ways have to drink big mug’s filled with beer and eating all those stuff. But their needs were served by all these snack stations around.
When the lights went out Snow Patrol appeared on stage while Gary Lightbody started with “Hands Open” and the hall was bursting into light and music! What a perfect start!
When we experienced Gary live on stage for the first time we got the best impression ever. This was at last year’s famous & fabulous U2 concert in the Berlin Olympic Stadium. Snow Patrol appeared as the supporting group forU2 and their performance was just breath taking! Gary was deeply impressed by this huge number of the audience: nearly 100,000!
Well, talking to the audience, he remarked “the arena has shrunk down since our last Berlin performance… isn’t it?” He’s such a funny guy making very good jokes and remarks throughout the concert. He is so very like-able and handsome, engaging everybody by his person-ality.
All lyrics and music are written by him and his particular voice is mainly leading the Snow Patrol songs. Experiencing them live is amazing!
What more to add? Every song from their set list was a well-known hit!
Chocolate/Eyes Open/Run/Chasing Cars/Shut Your Eyes/Set The Fire To The Third Bar/You Could Be Happy/Open Your Eyes
After performing some songs, Gary jumped into the front rows of the audience, shaking as many hands as could be… the body guards seemed to be quite clueless.
Standing back on stage he remarked about some big signs held up by a few girls in the second row. He asked “So you want me to sing these songs for you?” “Yes!!!” was the reply.
“Unfortunately I can’t do all for you…I forgot the words…” he’s so cute when lying to us! “But”, he contin-ued, “give me YOUR sign” he said to a group of girls. It was handed up to him and he showed it to us saying “O.K., this song I will do especially for you girls as re-quested!” “Crack The Shutters”started and the arena was singing along with Gary, dancing and shouting! A party for all!
When the last tunes were done, Gary took the sign and asked if he may keep this as a souvenir. Of course he was welcome to do so. Then, while holding the sign up to show it to us, he pointed on the signature “ xoxoxo” explaining “kiss & hugs…must be true love!”
And the music burst into the arena continuing this fan-tastic concert with:
Take Back The City/The Golden Floor/Please Take These Photos From My Hand/The Planets Bend Be-tween Us/It’s Beginning To Get To Me/How To Be Dead/Same
With incredulous astonishment we realised that the concert was about to come to its end when Gary said goodbye and all band members laid down their instru-ments. Applauding back to the audience Snow Patrol left.
Believe it or not, but several people already left their seats, heading to the exits. Burnie poked me whispering “Greggy, why are these people leaving? It’s not over yet, is it?”
“Yeah bumblebee, they’re rather silly. I even get the impression those humans are on the getaway from here! Perhaps they want being first on this escape! Hehehe…”
This made us laugh until standing ovations, shouting and whistling got Snow Patrol back on stage.
The terrific song “The Lightning Strike” was the highlight of this amazing concert. An excellent animated video, shown on a big screen at the stage’s background, illustrated it. Surprising effects were brought about by using Origami figures. Very impressive 16 minutes presentation!
When they ended their unique performance Gary said definitely goodbye…with “You’re All I Have”...animating us to sing along with him! What a great farewell!
We asked our humans if this was the final end. While stowing us away into the rucksack they agreed and we started our way home. This meant we got to our car and went on an easy ride through the illuminated city of Ber-lin.
Back home we jumped out and went to sleep immedi-ately while the humans shared a nice cold beer!
Hope you enjoyed reading our bear report and that you’ve got an idea of this amazing concert.
See you on 11th November 2010 at the Berlin “O2 World” where Amy MacDonald will perform her newest songs. Stay curious!
